Coto de Caza traces it roots back to the 1960 when as a hunting lodge it attracted many of Hollywood elite, the name actually translates to preserve of the hunt in Portugese. Eventually the Chevron Land and Development Company elected to convert the open space into low density housing and development began in the Northern part of the valley with The Los Ranchos Estates and The Village communities. Renowned tennis coach Vic Braden operated his school at what is now the Coto Valley Country Club. The equestrian center located in this same area hosted the modern pentathlon during the 1984 Olympics.
In 1987, the 7162 yard North golf course was opened and 8 years later it was joined by the equally challenging 6950 yard South course. Both courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Coto Golf and Racquet Club has become the centerpiece in which the community was developed around. Many of the homes are either located directly on the golf course or offer beautiful views of the golf course or the Coto Valley. The Coto Golf and Racquet Club in addition to two championship golf courses, offers 10 lighted tennis courts, three swimming pools and the recently completed, spectacular, 13,000 square foot fitness center.
Coto de Caza measures approximately 7 miles long and covers almost 8 square miles. The population, according to the 2000 census, was 13,057 residing in just over 4,000 homes. Bordering the Northern boundary of Coto de Caza is Santa Margarita Catholic High School, and St. Johns Episcopal School and Serra Catholic School are both located nearby.
